Trail 1: Night at the Museums20 July, Friday / 6.00pm to 10.00pm Do things really come alive after dark when museums close for the day? Experience a unique tour of the nooks and corners of some of our most historical buildings that are museums today. Find out who their past residents were and hear first-hand, their stories of the secrets of these buildings. Be prepared... for a most unusual night at our three National Museums. Tip: Come prepared with a sense of adventure! Trail 2: Eastern Adventure!21 July, Saturday / 9.00am to 1.00pm The eastern tip of our island has always held a certain charm. Perhaps it's sea-swept shoreline and its rich natural settings give it its unique charm. Or its seclusion, the result of being a military bastion of the British for decades, adds to that allure of mystery. Come with us as we recount memories of life and death, adventure and misadventure, and of man's brilliance and folly on this trail which takes you through high walls, barbed wire and more than half-a-century-old buildings set in lush greenery that harbour giant trees, unusual plants and birds. Tip: Come prepared with a sense of adventure! Trail 3: Tales of Bukit Timah21 July, Saturday / 1.00pm to 5.00pm Bukit Timah is unique in many ways. It is home to one of the last surviving primary rainforests of the world. It is also home to the rich and famous whose bungalows and landed property stand alongside a string of the most prominent schools and colleges in Singapore. Bukit Timah also teems with World War II history - the scene of some of the fiercest battles on the island in the days before the Fall of Singapore to the invading Japanese forces on 15 February 1942. And who will dispute the fact that Bukit Timah is a food haven with its exotic mix of Asian, Western and fusion cuisines? Tip: If you are looking for interesting and amazing stories to hear, then this trail is for you! Trail 4: Romancing the Night Away21 July, Saturday / 6.00pm to 10.00pm Ever wondered where mum and dad's favourite haunts were during their courtship days? Re-live romance in the '60s and '70s...when the signature courtship ritual was walking hand in hand along a seaside promenade enjoying the gentle caress of the sea breeze or tea with a chaperone in tow? Here's an evening trail specially designed to spice up your love life as it meanders through the 'hot' romantic spots of yesteryears. Tip: Come with your partner. Need we tell you more? Trail 5: Of Faiths and Beliefs22 July, Sunday / 9.00am to 1.00pm Here's a not-to-be-missed chance to discover the various religious and cultural beliefs of our multi-cultural mix of people. This trail will go under the veneer to explain the different schools that exist within mainstream religions of Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam and Christianity. Hear religious experts explain the richness and uniqueness of their faiths. Visit their places of worship and marvel at the architecture, some following the strict temple architectural guidelines from the Chola period in India or even the English churches of the past. Observe the symbolism and icons associated with each school and their main faith on this passage to enlightenment! Tip: Come with a camera, notebook and pen to take notes and snapshots for tomorrow's memories. Trail 6: Journey to the North-West22 July, Sunday / 1.00pm to 5.00pm Tucked in the north-western corner of our island is a legacy of rural, pre-1960s Singapore. Rivers that criss-cross the area gave rise to farms tended by Teochew and Hokkien families growing vegetables, tobacco, pepper and pineapples, and rearing poultry and pigs. Here was where the last tiger was shot on the island and the site of some of World War 2's bloodiest battles. Today, this is the home of a new industry - agri-tainment. Tip: Try finding out if this word is listed in Wikipedia or the trusted Oxford Dictionary. Otherwise, join us on this trail to find out what agri-tainment really means! Trail 7: The Other Face of Geylang27 July, Friday / 6.00pm to 10.00pm Mention Geylang and its notorious red-light district reputation may come to mind. But some individuals will beg to differ. Conducted by past and present Geylang residents, who will share with you cherished memories of the charming district and their pride for the neighbourhood, you will begin to realise that Geylang used to be the preferred choice of residence. Geylang is also known for its great food. Come explore a side of Geylang you've never seen before! Tip: If you are out to see what is already known, this tour isn't for you! Trail 8: Of People and Memories28 July, Saturday 9.00am to 1.00pm From learning how our national treasures are conserved and kept in climate-controlled environments, to why we preserve memories on tapes, photographs, diaries and documents, this is a valuable, behind-the-scenes journey into the conservation of our past and present. Then, discover another kind of memory that binds all Singapore men as you listen to first-hand reminisces of how tough and challenging circumstances made men out of boys. Tip: Come prepared to find out a side of Singapore you never knew! |
